The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Womble. Attorneys are encouraged to seek new opportunities—and have the support to make those aspirations real.
That’s one of the factors that drew Michael McCue to Womble. The IP litigator and trademark prosecutor was a Partner at Lewis Roca, which merged with Womble in January 2025. He quickly discovered that the newly combined firm was a place he wanted to stay.
“A lot of us feel like we are entrepreneurs but entrepreneurs not on our own in a small firm we started, but as part of a big firm where we're entrepreneurs together,” Michael said. “There’s always openness to doing things differently and being creative.”
For example, his team recently hired a U.S.-based attorney who practices Chinese trademark law. Instead of working remotely for a Chinese firm’s domestic clients, she now guides U.S.-based Womble clients through trademark issues in China—an area with which they needed help. It was a creative solution that benefits the clients, the firm, and the individual attorney.
That culture of innovation extends to firm leadership. Michael noted that Womble isn’t a firm with “entrenched leadership that never rolls over.” New laterals have ample opportunities to take leadership roles, if that is something they desire.
“Every firm says that they have a good culture, and I've worked at enough different firms that I know that's not the case,” he said. “Like the former Lewis Roca, people at Womble are very positive, optimistic, and willing to help each other. We work well together as a team to reach a common goal.”
